2009 Season HGSA Coaching Expectations

12 and under- by season end players should:

  • Understand proper throwing techniquebeginner-art-image
  • Proper batting technique including bunting
  • Proper fielding technique
  • Softball terminology such as bunt, steal, foul ball etc
  • Basic rules i.e. infield fly, dropped third strike, tagging
  • Introduce to and understand signs given by base coaches
  • Stealing
  • Bunt coverage
  • Situational coverage, i.e. hot box, 1st and 3rd, who covers what/when
  • Proper sliding technique

14 and under- show proficiency with minimal coaching:

  • Proper throwing technique
  • Proper batting technique including bunting
  • Proper fielding technique
  • Softball terminology such as bunt, steal, foul ball etc
  • Basis rules, i.e. infield fly, dropped third strike, tagging
  • Introduce to and understand signs given by base coaches
  • Stealing
  • Bunt coverage
  • Situational coverage, i.e. hot box, 1st and 3rd, who covers what/when
  • Proper sliding technique
  • Introduction of slap hitting

16 to 18 years old:fastpitch-advanced_small

  • Emphasis detail on all aspects of the game.
  • Proficient on slap hitting where applicable.
  • Detail on situational defensive coverage and offensive strategies.

HGSA Coaching Philosophies at Each Age Level

12 and under

  1. To provide basic instruction on all skills at an entry level on the sport of softball.
  2. Emphasis is placed on fun and learning introductory skills with fair playing time. (Note: playing time may be impacted by attendance at practice and disciplinary actions.)
  3. Teams will not be grouped by ability.
  4. Will participate in practice, league games and tournament play.

14 and under

  1. To provide advanced instructions in all skills on the sport of softball
  2. Emphasis will progress toward more detailed instruction on the fundamental skills.
  3. More emphasis on fair playing time during league play. During tournament play, playing time will depend on the conditions of each game situation. Playing time may not be equal.
  4. Will participate in practice, league games and tournament play.

16 and under

  1. To provide advanced instructions on an individual and team basis.
  2. Emphasis will be placed on successful execution of the game- encompassing both physical and mental demands.
  3. Emphasis is placed on reaching the highest level of softball.
  4. Playing time will be dependant on the conditions of each game situation. Playing time will not be equal.
  5. Coaches will be expected to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of each player, utilize their strengths, and work toward eliminating their weaknesses.
  6. Will participate in practice, league games and tournament play.

18 and under

  1. To provide advanced instructions on an individual and team basis.
  2. Emphasis will be placed on successful execution on the game- encompassing both physical and mental demands.
  3. Emphasis is placed on reaching the highest level of softball.
  4. Playing time will be dependant on the conditions of each game situation, playing time will not be equal.
  5. Coaches will be expected to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of each player, utilize their strengths, and work toward eliminating their weaknesses.
